If you are a fan of retro games, and a golfer, Mario Golf 64 is the ultimate in entertainment for you! Designed for the Nintendo 64 (N64), this is the first in the Mario Golf series. It was originally released in 1999 (it’s scary how time flies!), and it was designed by Camelot Software Planning. This is also the very first game in the Mario Sports line, followed by Mario Tennis and many others.
This golf video came uses hazards and characters that come from the Mario universe. It has many modes that you can play in including skins match, speed golf, ring shot, and even mini golf. You can even link it with the Game Boy Color version of the game to share data.
Like most similar games there is a sliding bar that you use to decide when to hit the ball. When the slider goes to the left, you click to decide the strength of the shot. When it slides to the left, the timing of your click with determine if it goes straight, slices or hooks. You can make adjustments to play various weather conditions such as wind, rain and wetness. You can also put various types of spin on the ball to determine how it rolls on approach shots. Putting acts the same way, but you need to adjust to play the green’s contour.
You have eight different Mario universe courses to choose from. That includes: Toad Highlands, Shy Guy Desert, Koopa Park, Yoshi’s Island, Mario’s Star, Boo Valley, Peach’s Castle, and Luigi’s Garden. All of the 8 courses have various obstacles and difficulties.
There are many different characters that you can choose to play as. Each character has 3 different color options. As you advance through the game, different characters are unlocked. The available characters are: Plum, Charlie, Princess Peach, Baby Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Sonny, Wario, Harry, Mario, Maple, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and the ultimate Metal Mario. Each of these characters has different strengths and weaknesses. As you unlock later players, their power increases. Obviously, the greatest and most powerful character is Metal Mario. The only character in the game that you can’t play is Toad.
Mario Golf sold over 1 million copies and it is the 40th best selling game of all time for the Nintendo 64.
The most helpful Mario Golf 64 cheats, cheat codes and tricks that I have used are:
- When you see the Press Start screen, do the following to unlock all of the playable characters at once- Down, Down, Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right (D-Pad for all), C-Down, C-Down, C-Left, C-Left, C-Left, C-Right, C-Right, C-Right.
- If you make a mistake on a hole and want a second attempt at it, just save and quit the game. When you start it up again you can play the hole over.
- If you want to hear some hidden music- Go into 4 player mode. Everyone needs to be either Yoshi or Donkey Kong. Now go to any course except for mini golf. You will hear a secret song!
- If you are left handed, and you want to play the game as a left handed golfer, when you choose your player just hold down the Z or L buttons.
My final review of the Mario Golf game for the N64 is that I just love it! This is easily one of the most entertaining golf video games that you will ever play. Unlike a bunch of old, garbage sports games, this one has stood the test of time. Obviously, you can’t buy it new anymore at your gaming store, but you can still find a used copy online at places such as eBay and Amazon. I just searched and found a used copy for sale online, that is in great condition, for just $15. It’s easily worth every penny!
