Have you ever played night golf? If you have, you know how fun it is. If you haven’t what are you waiting for? You will need some night golf balls (aka glow balls), your clubs, some friends to keep you from getting scared in the dark, and a whole lot of humility. Seriously, if you have never played golf at night, you need to give it a shot!
The most important equipment that you will need to buy in order to play on your course at night is a ball that you can see. With a regular one, you will have no clue where you hit it, and even if you did you wouldn’t be able to find it in the dark! The solution is a glowing golf ball that has its own source of illumination so that it literally shines/glows. With a glow ball you can see where you are going to hit, watch it in flight, and even find it so that you can continue playing. There are a few choices you need to make in choosing a night golf ball though. Do you want one with an LED, or one with a glow stick inserted into it?
If you go for the glow stick route, it’s basically a normal looking ball with a hole in the middle of it. You get some short little glow sticks that you snap and then place into the hole. The result is that the stick will glow from the holes, and you will be able to see it the whole time. The sticks may last you the whole game. If they don’t, you just pop out the old one and place a new one in its spot. The negative part about the glow stick balls is that its pretty hard to get the stick all of the way into it. For some reason it’s just really tough. You end up with a little piece of it hanging out. Of course that’s aggravating and effects the aerodynamics, but if you’re taking this night sport that seriously you probably have bigger problems. Another advantage of these, in comparison to the LED ones, is that they will never break on you. As long as you have another stick to put in it, this sucker just keeps on ticking. The prices on these are kind of all over the place, but I recently found them online for around $10 a piece. You can probably get them for cheaper.
Your other option is to go with an LED ball. LED night golf balls are really amazing, and the technology behind them is pretty neat. The basics is that it looks just like any other ball. To make them light up, all you have to do is hit the ball or tap it on a hard surface. When the ball is struck, the LED sensor turns it on and it transforms from a normal looking ball into one that glows brightly. One way to use it is to turn it on before you hit. The other option is to just tee it up and whack away. Once it turns on it will stay on for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. That gives you plenty of time to go and find it so that you can hit your next shot. The positive part of the LED balls for playing golf at night is that they act pretty much like a normal one. They may not go as far as your normal ones, but it’s pretty close. The negative part about them is that some people have a problem with them breaking. Since they cost you around $8 or so a piece, that can be a real issue.
After you figure out which ball you are going to use, the next thing is to round up some friends to go and have some fun with you.! Night golfing is a blast, and I really hope that you will try it.
